The ceremony will be held today, January 30, at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria, 40 years to the day of the original dedication. A small collection of historical nursing uniforms and caps will be featured, along with speeches and a group ribbon cutting.

When it opened its doors in December 1971, Valley Hospital boasted an eight-bed emergency department with plans to add 11 intensive care unit beds. Formerly a nursing home, it had been purchased by Valley Hospital Ltd., a group of local businessmen who then transformed it into a hospital.

Today, Valley Hospital has a 54-bed emergency department which is the first point of entry for hundreds of stroke and cardiac patients. The hospital is a Primary Stroke Center, and a Chest Pain Center accredited with PCI, and has utilized its therapeutic hypothermia protocol on over 100 patients since it debuted in December 2009. The addition of a biplane angiography suite allows interventional radiologists to perform less invasive procedures for aneurysms and other advanced medical procedures.

Meanwhile, the hospital added more services to meet the needs of a fast-growing community. Maternity services opened in late 1987. Today, approximately 3,000 babies are welcomed into the world by the Valley Hospital team each year. A level three (Level III) neonatal intensive care unit opened in 1997 to care for some of southern Nevada’s tiniest, most fragile patients, some of them weighing less than three pounds at birth.

Valley Hospital was renowned for its Flight for Life (FFL) program, aka “the flying emergency room.” During its 21-year history, approximately 20,000 flights took place over a 150-mile radius that spanned Nevada, Utah, California and Arizona. Flight for Life played a crucial role in the 1980 MGM fire and even today, long-time Valley Hospital staff members recall their role in the mass casualty. Flight For Life was sold in December 2001 but lives on through the recognition of a long-time flight nurse killed in the line of duty. Kathy Batterman Elementary School is located in southwest Las Vegas.

Additionally, Valley Hospital is home to one of the nation’s largest osteopathic graduate medical education programs featuring approximately 80 residents and seven programs – internal medicine, family medicine, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology and traditional, along with a fellowship in pulmonary medicine. Fellowships in gastroenterology and critical care/pulmonary medicine, along with a residency in orthopedic surgery, will begin in July 2012. The program’s first two neurology residents will complete their residency by January 31; one will remain in Southern Nevada to practice medicine and the other is relocating to Southern California.

Although several employees who opened the hospital have since retired in recent years, there are six employees who will mark 35 or more years of employment at Valley Hospital in calendar year 2012 and a total of 34 employees who will celebrate 30 or more years.

When Geraldine (Geri) Grant began volunteering at Valley Hospital in 1986, Ronald Reagan was president of the United States; the Oprah Winfrey Show debuted; and “Top Gun” was the number one movie.

At Valley Hospital, plenty of patients needed surgery. That’s where Geri found her niche – and never left!

“I’ve volunteered in Outpatient Surgery for my entire 25 years,” said Geri, who is 83 years old. Her volunteer “career” started when her youngest daughter wanted to be a candy striper. Valley was also seeking adult volunteers, so Geri signed up as well. Now, on Wednesdays, she can be found in the Outpatient Surgery department helping the nurses with whatever they need – making beds, compiling charts or chatting with patients and family members.

In addition to her Outpatient Surgery duties, Geri also helped with special events over the years, such as fundraising, holiday party planning, and acting as tour guide for schools and scouting groups. “We would see the [Flight for Life] helicopter on the roof and the kids would get to sit in it – always a crowd pleaser! (The pilot always said he would take me for a ride one day but he never did!), We visited radiology and the technician showed the children X-rays of items that had been swallowed, like coins and a spoon! We ended with a trip to the cafeteria for a snack or lunch.”

Geri counts many memorable moments during her 25 years of volunteering, particularly celebrating the various holiday parties created especially for the children of employees. “I often brought my own grandchildren to the Easter egg hunts, Halloween and Christmas parties.” She loved it when her daughters would stop by and have lunch with her in the hospital cafeteria during a shift, and Geri and a former fellow volunteer would always visit the nursery to admire the newest babies.

As she marks her silver anniversary at the end of April, Geri has decided to hang up her royal blue volunteer jacket and her comfortable shoes. “ I’ve always kept busy and it didn’t occur to me to stop, until recently. And of course, there were the annual volunteer luncheons to look forward to!

However, Geri has plans for her newfound spare time - helping to care for her newest grandchild (the newest baby of the former candy striper). “We haven’t had a grandchild in 14 years, so I’m enjoying being a new grandmother again. They live with me, so much of my time now is spent helping to take care of her – and I love it! How’s that for retirement plans?”

Even as she retires from her volunteer duties, her heart and mind remain filled with many treasured memories. “I love all the volunteers I’ve worked with and many have become my best friends. The volunteer managers have all been wonderful – Linda, Dena Dzierbicki and Beth Bartel. And last, but certainly not least, all the doctors, nurses and other staff from top to bottom have been great. The Outpatient Surgery nurses and staff are just like a second family and it will be a very sad day when I leave them. Thank you for 25 great years!”

For the record, Geri has six wonderful children (and their spouses!), 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren!

Valley Hospital has been approved for an orthopedic surgery residency by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). An orthopedic surgeon is a medical doctor with specialized training in diagnosing, treating and managing disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including injuries to the bones, joint, muscles, ligaments or tendons and conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis.

According to www.boneandjointburden.org, there will be an increased need for orthopedic surgeons that “will likely be intensified by current demographic trends, including the graying of the baby boomer population, the epidemic of morbid obesity and the higher recreational activity levels of our elderly population.”

Valley Hospital’s five-year orthopedic surgery program will begin July 1, 2012, under the supervision of program director Randall Yee, DO, a Las Vegas-based orthopedic surgeon with Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Yee completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Midwestern University in Illinois and a Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine in California. He completed his medical internship at Botsford General Hospital in Michigan after graduating from University of Health Sciences – College of Osteopathic medicine in Kansas City, MO. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State

Currently, Valley Hospital has approximately 80 residents in the programs of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Traditional Internship, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and Neurology, and offers a Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine. The hospital established its graduate medical education residency program in 2006.

For more information on the residency programs at Valley Hospital, visit www.IChooseValley.com and click on “Graduate Medical Education.”
