About/History:
Founded in 1971, the College of Southern Nevada ensures student success. CSN guarantees access to a quality education in high-demand professional and technology careers – driven by progressive, faculty-crafted learning environments and state of the art facilities. As Nevada’s largest institution of higher learning, CSN educates a skilled workforce that has been the foundation of the state’s dynamic economic development, growth and prosperity.

Now in its 35th academic year, CSN is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The third largest community college of its kind in the country, CSN serves two-thirds of Nevada’s population. In the 2004-05 academic year, CSN expanded its traditional role as a community college to join a growing number of two-year institutions in America offering four-year baccalaureate degrees in specific high-demand disciplines. Emerging as the second such college in Nevada, CSN offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene in addition to its nationally recognized dental hygiene associate degree program.

Since 1995, CSN more than doubled its size in student enrollment and full-time faculty. Each semester, CSN registers over 35,000 students and offers over 3,000 class sections from early morning to late evening, on weekends and via distance education to match the work and life styles of area residents and employers. Over 1,800 students graduate yearly with associate degrees and certificates of achievement in 80 career programs. Another 22,300 students annually attend continuing education and customized business-training courses.

The college employs 2,400 people, including 500 full-time faculty (nearly a third with doctorates) and 900 part-time instructors while operating three main campuses and 20 academic centers in four counties, in a 44,000 square mile area the size of Virginia. Since 1995, CSN has expanded facility space to over one million square feet.

Among the latest developments is a $20 million 80,000 sq. ft. academic Telecommunications Center at Cheyenne Campus to meet demands for high tech careers in fiber optics, computer networking, broadcasting, and various telecommunication, electronic engineering and media technologies. A $25 million Health Sciences and Nursing Center at Charleston Campus opened in Fall 2005 to support nearly three-dozen high-demand health programs and foster new development such as EEG-Sonography, Histology and Biotechnology and a $25 million classroom/learning center will open on the Charleston campus in 2007.

Through innovative programs, strong community partnerships, and private donors, CSN helped reduce Nevada's high school dropout rate and improve the go-to-college rate. With the concentrated guidance and academic planning of a new “Students First” initiative, those seeking degrees, certificates and transfer credits will earn them in the shortest time possible. Other major achievements since 1995 include: Community College High School on three CSN campuses, four college academic and computing centers on high school campuses, Nevada’s largest contingent of Millennium Scholars, the state's best diversity recruitment and largest distance education programs, special tutoring/retention services and Learning & Earning mentoring for at-risk teens, and the state’s only two-year college intercollegiate athletics program for men and women that claimed the 2003 Junior College World Series and Championship of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
